Cyclo-cross is one of the most exhilarating disciplines in cycling, combining elements of road cycling, mountain biking, and steeplechase into one intense, action-packed sport.
As Ribble Cycles prepares to attend the 2025 British National Cyclo-Cross Championships at Cyclopark Kent, we examine the sport's rich history, its significance in cycling, and what to expect at this year’s championship event.
What is Cyclo-Cross?
Cyclo-cross, also known as CX, takes riders through mixed terrain, including grass, mud, sand, and tarmac on a lapped course. Competitors tackle obstacles that require them to dismount, carry their bikes, and remount seamlessly. With races lasting around an hour, it's a sport of skill, speed, and endurance.

Cyclo-Cross in Europe: Belgium's National Passion
When people think of cyclo-cross, Belgium immediately springs to mind. The country is the heartland of CX, after all, with thousands of passionate fans flocking to races and cheering on local legends like Wout van Aert and arch-rival Mathieu van der Poel (Netherlands). Cyclo-cross is deeply ingrained in Belgian culture, drawing massive audiences both at the venues and on television.
The rivalry between top athletes, the carnival-like atmosphere at races, and the thrill of unpredictable terrain make cyclo-cross a must-watch sport across Europe. Countries such as the Netherlands, France, and Italy have also contribututed to the sport's growth but Belgium remains the spritual home of cyclo-cross.
Cyclo-Cross in the UK: A Storied Past
Despite it's popularity in Belgium, the UK has its own proud history of cyclo-cross racing. The British Cyclo-Cross Association, established in 1953, laid the foundation for the sport's development. By 1955, the first British Cyclo-Cross Championships were held in Welwyn Garden City.
Over the years, iconic events such as the Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross have tested riders’ skills across the rugged terrain of Yorkshire. Today, the UK cyclo-cross scene is thriving, with increasing participation from grassroots to elite levels.
